How to pick the right name
Choose your nickname first
Most classic names come with a ready-made nickname: William to Will, Theodore to Teddy, Alexander to Alex. Make sure you like where the name will end up on the playground.
Balance a classic with a rarer middle name
A classic first name like John or Henry pairs well with a more unusual middle name, so your son gets a familiar name and a bit of personality.
Think about popularity
Some classics, like James and Henry, are in the US top ten, so your son may share his name in class. Names like Edmund, Ambrose or Rufus are just as old but far less common: none was in the 2025 top 700.

Classic boy names, measured: the 12 that never left the US top 100, the comebacks, and the classics that faded
By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names
We define a classic with data: a name in the US top 1,000 every year since records began in 1880. Only 12 boy names did better and stayed in the top 100 all 146 years, from James and William to Samuel.
Classics are also far less crowded than they were: in 1950 the top 10 boys' names went to 33.8% of baby boys, and in 2025 to 8.0%. The finder above narrows the names by section, length, peak decade or US popularity, and the tags show how long each name spent in the top 100.
The 12 boy names that never left the US top 100
- John's long reign. John was the top US boys' name every year from 1880 to 1923, and in England it was usually the most common boy's name from the 1200s to the 1900s (Behind the Name).
- Less crowded now. James was No. 6 in 2025 with 11,945 boys, about 1 in 143, while the top 10 names together covered 8.0% of boys, against 33.8% in 1950.

Classics that faded
- Old Testament names came later. Names like Gideon came into English use with the Protestant Reformation and were popular with the Puritans (Behind the Name).
- How the data works. Social Security lists only names given to at least 5 babies, counts each spelling separately (Philip and Phillip, Stephen and Steven) and drops accents, so a classic split across spellings ranks lower than its true use.
| Name | Best rank | 2025 |
