How the Census counts last names

The 2020 Census recorded about 7.8 million different last names for 299 million people, 90.2% of those counted. Just 11 were reported more than a million times, 258 names cover a quarter of everyone, and the top ten cover 4.7%. Eight names were in the top 15 in the 1790 Census and in every Census surname list since: Smith, Johnson, Williams, Brown, Jones, Miller, Davis, Wilson.

Before counting, the Bureau keeps only the letters A to Z. It removes accents, apostrophes, spaces and suffixes such as Jr and III, so García is counted as GARCIA, O'Brien as OBRIEN and Smith Jr as SMITH, and it strips out entries that are not names, such as Child or Resident. The public list keeps names held by at least 100 people in both 2010 and 2020, with a little random noise added to every count for privacy.

Around the world, Wang, Li and Zhang lead China's official list, and in South Korea's 2015 census 21.5% of people were named Kim.
