Privacy check

  • The number 2009 looks like a birth or graduation year, which helps strangers guess your age.

The check runs in your browser and looks only at the letters you type. It cannot know your school, city or workplace, so read the name once more with those in mind.

If it is taken

  • themayamoon
  • itsmayamoon
  • mayamoonhq
  • justmayamoon
  • mayamoon_studio
  • heymayamoon
  • mayamoon_x

The variations add words, not numbers, so they do not hint at an age or a birth year. We cannot see which names are taken: check each one on the platform's own sign-up screen.

How to check availability

How the username generator works

Each username is built from a template and short word banks. A template might be adjective + noun (neonfalcon), the + word + word with dots (the.lunar.fox) or noun + title (pickle_whisperer). The generator picks a template at random and fills each slot with a word from a hand-picked list, so every click gives a new mix.

The style menu swaps the word lists. Cool uses sharp words like neon, static and viper. Cute uses soft and sweet words. Aesthetic pairs dreamy words like velvet, dusk and lavender with endings such as .diaries and .archive. Funny, Gamer and Professional each have their own banks and formats, from xXNovaFangXx to northpoint.studio.

Type your name or an interest in the keyword box to blend it into many of the ideas, like lil.maya or pizzawizard. We cannot check whether a handle is free on a given platform, so search for it before you commit. Every word list has been checked to keep results clean and friendly.

Pick a platform and every idea is turned into a handle that follows that site's rules: lowercase with dots or underscores for Instagram, TikTok and Discord, and capitals for readability on Roblox, YouTube and Twitch, where the platform treats Maya and maya as the same name. Each handle is cut to the platform's length limit, and one that cannot fit is skipped. We cannot see which handles are taken, so check availability on the platform before you get attached.

That is Quick mode: instant and unlimited. For something more specific, switch to Custom mode, set a few options and add a sentence of details. An AI language model suggests 10 original names, each with the idea behind it, and More like this gives you variations on any name you like.

Tips for choosing a good name

Check every platform at once

Paste a finalist into the checker below to see where it breaks the rules on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Snapchat and Discord, then look it up on each platform. The same handle everywhere makes you easy to find, and easy to link across sites.

Keep it easy to say and spell

If you have to spell it out loud for friends, it is too complicated. Skip swapping letters for numbers unless that is part of your style.

Use dots and underscores when a name is taken

A dot, an underscore or a leading the (the.lunar.fox, silent_viper) often frees up a name you love without changing it.

Protect your privacy

Use an interest or nickname instead of your full name, birthday or school. A handle like pizzawizard says more about you and gives away less.

Pick one you will still like next year

Trendy jokes age fast. If the account is for work or a long-term project, lean toward the Professional or Aesthetic styles.

Username generator guide: pick, check and protect your handle

By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 24, 2026 · How we research names

The first username you think of is often the one you should not use. It may hold your real name, birth year, school or city, or repeat a handle you already use everywhere, which makes it easy to connect your profiles and to guess things about you.

A generated name can fail in quieter ways too: it may be taken, too long for the platform, or hard to spell out loud. These six steps take you from ideas to a handle you can claim safely. Quick mode builds names in your browser, so what you type in its keyword box is never sent to us or stored; Custom mode sends your details to an AI service, so leave personal information out.

  1. Step 1Pick the kindSocial, gamer, creator, community or private login.
  2. Step 2Generate 10, keep 3Broad first, then a short list.
  3. Step 3Run a privacy checkNo real name, birth year, school or city.
  4. Step 4Check the rulesLength and characters for each platform.
  5. Step 5Check availabilityOn the platform itself, with the date.
  6. Step 6Claim it safelyUnique password and two-step sign-in.

Pick the kind of username you need

A public handle and a private login do different jobs. Decide which one you are making before you generate, then use the matching settings in the generator above.

KindWhereWhat mattersGenerator settingsExample
Social handleInstagram, TikTokEasy to say, type and share, with no personal detailsStyle: Aesthetic, Cute or Cool. Platform: Instagram or TikTokthe.lunar.fox

Community aliasDiscord, Reddit, forumsThemed and memorable, kept apart from your main profilesStyle: Funny or Cool. Platform: Discordpickle_whisperer
Private loginEmail sign-in, banking, accounts nobody seesRandom and unique, not memorableNot this generator: use the random username or password generator in your password managerNone

Generate 10, keep 3

The first available name is not automatically the best one. Start broad, then cut hard.

  1. 1Leave the keyword empty, or type an interest rather than your name.
  2. 2Pick a style and, if you know where the handle will live, a platform: ideas then arrive already formatted for it.
  3. 3Generate two or three batches, locking the ideas you like so they stay while the rest refresh.
  4. 4Save candidates with the heart, then cut to three finalists.

Read each finalist aloud and ask a friend to repeat and spell it after hearing it once. If they cannot, simplify it before you check whether it is free.

Run a privacy check before you fall for a name

Ask these six questions

  • Does it include your real name or an obvious short form of it?
  • Does it include a birth year, graduation year, age or school?
  • Does it name your city, neighborhood, team or employer?
  • Have you used the same or a nearly identical handle somewhere else?
  • Could a stranger guess your age, location or workplace from it?
  • Would you be happy to see it next to a public post?

A yes to any of them means drop the detail or pick another name.

Personal details in a handle help strangers piece together who you are, find your other accounts and write scam messages that sound convincing. The FTC's advice is plain: don't use your name, your age or your hometown, and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre warns that criminals use what they find to make phishing more convincing. Roblox bans real names and phone numbers in usernames outright. An interest, a mood or an invented word says something about you without giving anything away. If you need a number to free up a name, pick a short one at random, never your birth year.

Same handle everywhere? It is a good idea when you want to be found, like a creator building one brand. It is a bad idea when you want your gaming, school and work lives kept apart: a 2011 study found that usernames alone can link a significant share of people's profiles across sites. Choose on purpose, not out of habit. The NCSC also lists random strings of letters and numbers as a sign of a fake account, so a memorable handle without personal details is the sweet spot.

Check the platform's rules

Each platform sets its own length and character rules, and a username, display name and handle can follow different ones. Pick a platform in the generator and the ideas are trimmed to fit; for anything else, check the official page. Rules reviewed October 24, 2026.

Check availability on the platform itself

  1. 1Write down the exact candidate, including dots, underscores, capitals and numbers.
  2. 2Open the platform's own sign-up or edit-profile screen, not a web search.
  3. 3Type the name and note whether the platform accepts it, rejects it or suggests a variation.
  4. 4Repeat on every platform where you want that name.
  5. 5Write down the platform, the result and the date.
  6. 6Claim your favorite right away: handles can be taken between checks.

A web search that shows no profile does not mean a name is free: accounts can be private, suspended or renamed. Do not type personal details into third-party checkers to get better suggestions, and if a platform offers a variation, run it through the privacy questions before you accept it.

Keep a shortlist and a rejection log

Noting why a name failed stops you circling back to it.

Username, password and two-step sign-in do different jobs

A username tells a site which account you mean, and it is often public. A password proves the account is yours. Two-step sign-in (also called multi-factor authentication, or MFA) adds a second check, such as an authenticator app, a security key or a code. A clever, private username does not stop password reuse, phishing or stolen passwords, so set up the other two when you claim the name.

Sources: NIST SP 800-63B-4 (2025), OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet, OWASP on credential stuffing, FTC on two-factor authentication, FTC on strong passwords.

When you create the account

  • Use a password you use nowhere else; a password manager makes this easy.
  • Turn on two-step sign-in (an authenticator app, security key or code) when you create the account, not later.
  • Never use the username, or a variation of it, as your password.
  • Keep your recovery email and phone number off your public profile.
  • An email alias can keep your main address private, but it does not replace a strong password or two-step sign-in.

Review old accounts every six to 12 months

  • Search for your old handles and email aliases to find forgotten profiles.
  • Remove birth years, locations, schools and contact details where you can.
  • Replace any reused passwords and turn on two-step sign-in.
  • Update recovery emails, phone numbers and backup codes.
  • Delete accounts you no longer use when the platform offers a way to do it.

Final checklist

  • I know which kind of username this is.
  • I generated at least 10 ideas and kept three finalists.
  • My finalists have no real name, birth year, school, employer or location.
  • Someone else can say and spell it after hearing it once.
  • I checked each platform's current rules.
  • I checked availability on the platform itself and wrote down the date.
  • The account has a unique password and two-step sign-in.
  • My recovery details are up to date and not on my public profile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I come up with a good username?

Combine two words you like, such as an adjective and an animal (neonfalcon) or a hobby and a title (pizzawizard). Type a keyword above to blend your name or interest into the ideas.

What are some cute usernames?

Cute usernames pair a soft word with a sweet one, like tinydumpling, sleepy.otter or lil.mochi. Pick the Cute style for more.

What are aesthetic usernames?

Aesthetic usernames use dreamy words such as moon, velvet, lavender and dusk, often joined with a dot, like soft.lavender, golden.dusk or halcyon.hours.

What should I do if my username is taken?

Do what Instagram's own help suggests: add a period, an underscore, a number or an abbreviation, or put the or its in front. Skip numbers if you can: almost any two digits can be read as an age or a birth year. The checker below suggests variations to try.

What are the username rules on Instagram, TikTok and Roblox?

Instagram allows letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and up to 30 characters is the widely reported limit; its help pages do not state one. TikTok usernames are 2 to 24 letters, numbers, underscores and periods and cannot end with a period. Roblox usernames are 3 to 20 letters and numbers with at most one underscore, not at the start or end. Platforms change their rules, so check the sign-up page if one is rejected.

Should I use the same username on every platform?

Only if you want people to find you everywhere, as a creator or brand might. A 2011 study found that usernames alone can link a significant share of people's profiles across sites, so if you want gaming, school and work kept apart, use a different handle on each.

Should my username include my real name?

For a creator or work account, using your name can be a deliberate choice; just leave out your birth year, school, employer and city. For gaming, community and private accounts, an interest or nickname gives away less.

Why shouldn't I put my birth year or city in a username?

Details like a birth year, school or city help strangers guess who you are, link your accounts, and write convincing scam messages. A short number you pick at random does the same job without revealing anything.

How can I check if a username is available?

Type it into the platform's own sign-up or edit-profile screen, which is the only reliable check, and note the date. A web search that shows no profile does not prove a name is free, because accounts can be private, suspended or renamed. Our generator cannot see which handles are taken.

What is the difference between a username and a password?

A username tells a site which account you mean, and it is often public. A password proves the account is yours and must stay secret. Never reuse a username as a password, and turn on two-step sign-in.

Are random usernames safer than memorable ones?

For private logins, yes: a random, unique username reveals nothing and is hard to guess. Public handles need to be memorable, so make them safe by leaving out personal details instead of making them unreadable.

How many username ideas should I generate?

Generate at least 10, then keep three finalists. That leaves room to drop names that give away personal details, are hard to say, break a platform's rules or are already taken.

What are the username rules on Discord, YouTube, Twitch and Reddit?

Discord usernames are 2 to 32 lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods, with no two periods in a row. YouTube handles are 3 to 30 characters and can use letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and periods. Twitch usernames are 4 to 25 characters. Reddit says a username cannot be changed after you sign up, so choose carefully.

How often should I review my old accounts?

Every six to 12 months. Look for profiles you forgot about, personal details you no longer want public, reused passwords and out-of-date recovery emails or phone numbers, and delete accounts you no longer use.

What is the difference between a username and a display name?

The username is your unique handle, with strict rules and limits on changes. The display name is the label shown on your profile: on Discord, TikTok, Snapchat and Roblox it can include spaces or emoji and can be changed far more often. Pick the username carefully and have fun with the display name.

Which platforms make it hardest to change a username?

Reddit says usernames cannot be changed at all, Snapchat allows one change a year, Twitch one every 60 days, and Roblox charges Robux and keeps your old usernames visible to other players. TikTok allows a change every 30 days and Discord twice a week.

What is Custom mode?

Custom mode lets you set a few options and add a sentence of details. An AI language model then suggests 10 original names, each with the idea behind it, and you can ask for more like any name you like.

Can I use a name from Custom mode?

Yes. Each handle is checked against the platform's length and character rules, but not for availability, so try it on the platform itself before you settle on it.
