How the dog name generator works
This generator starts with a hand-picked list of 202 dog names and, once you use it, adds the names from all our dog name lists, over 1,400 in all. Each name is tagged as a boy name, a girl name or both, and with styles where they apply: cute, tough, funny, food, classic, unique, big dogs and small dogs.
Choose a gender and a style and the generator keeps only the names that match both, then shuffles a dozen of them. Names that work for any dog carry both gender tags, so they show up either way. Leave the menus on Any to see the whole list.
Every name comes with a short note. Some give the meaning, such as Rufus (Latin for red-haired) or Kai (Hawaiian for sea). Others explain the reference or the kind of dog the name suits best.
That is Quick mode: instant and unlimited. For something more specific, switch to Custom mode, set a few options and add a sentence of details. An AI language model suggests 10 original names, each with a note on why it suits, and More like this gives you variations on any name you like.

Tips for choosing a good name
Short names are easier to call
The AKC and many trainers suggest one or two syllables, ideally ending in a vowel so you can lift your voice on it. No study has tested name length, so if you love a long name like Butterscotch, just plan a short version such as Scotch or Butters.
Avoid names that sound like commands
Kit sounds like sit and Bo sounds like no. In a 2021 study, dogs treated their name with one consonant changed much like their real name, so a name that differs from a cue only in its consonants is the easiest to mix up.
Name the grown-up dog, not the puppy
A fluffy eight-week-old Tiny may become a 100-pound adult. That can be the joke, but pick on purpose.
Say it out loud in public
You will shout the name at the dog park, the vet and the front door. Make sure it feels good to say in front of strangers.
