AI name generator
Describe what you need a name for and get 10 new ideas with a reason for each: characters, pets, businesses, teams, usernames and places.
How it works
Pick what the name is for, describe it in a sentence, and an AI language model suggests 10 names with a reason for each. The more specific you are, the better the ideas: mention a mood, a setting, a culture or a word you love.
Lock the names you like and press Generate again: locked names stay, and the AI is told which names you have already seen so it never repeats one. Each reason explains why a name fits; it is not a meaning. For real names with checked meanings, use the baby name generator or browse names A to Z. For fantasy worlds, try the fantasy name generator.
How to write a good description
- Say what it is and one thing that makes it different. For example: “a kind dragon who runs a bakery”
- Add a mood or a setting. For example: “a cozy candle shop in a rainy seaside town”
- Name a culture or a sound you want, if any. For example: “a desert kingdom with soft, flowing names”
- Say what to avoid. For example: “a trivia team, nothing with quiz in it”
The AI is told to avoid trademarks, brand names, celebrities and existing characters, and every result is screened against our list of blocked words, but no filter is perfect: check a name before you use it for a business, a book or a product.
Frequently asked questions
How does the AI name generator work?
Your description is sent to an AI language model, which suggests 10 original names with a short reason for each. Every result is screened against our list of blocked words before you see it.
Is the AI name generator free?
Yes. There is a fair-use limit of 10 requests per minute so the tool stays fast for everyone.
Do you store what I type?
We do not save your description or link it to you. It is sent to OpenRouter and the AI model provider it routes to, which handle it under their own privacy policies, so leave out personal details. See our privacy page.
Can I use the names for my business?
You can use any name you like, but check trademarks, domain names and social handles before you commit, because an AI can suggest a name that someone already uses.
Are AI names better than the other generators?
They are different. Our generators' Quick mode uses real names and rules we wrote, which is better for baby names and meanings, and most generators also have a Custom mode that asks the AI with that generator's own options. This page is best when your idea fits no generator, like a dragon who runs a bakery.
Does the AI tell me what a name means?
No. AI models can get meanings wrong, so the reasons here explain why a name fits your description. For the meaning and origin of a real name, look it up on its name page, where meanings come from published name dictionaries.
