Anime girl names: 140+ Japanese names with meanings

141 names · Updated · By The Nomezo Editors · Save to Pinterest

Anime girl names are real Japanese given names, like Sakura (cherry blossom), Hikari (light) and Rin (dignified), and nearly every one has a meaning that comes from the kanji used to write it.

This page lists 140+ real Japanese names that anime and manga use for girls, grouped by style: cute, floral, nature, strong, classic, modern, unisex, musical and sweet-meaning names. Each note gives a common kanji spelling, its meaning and a pronunciation tip where English speakers may stumble. The same name can be written with different kanji, so each note gives one common spelling: treat its meaning as one option, not the only one. We list real names first; the guide below covers the anime girls who made some of them famous.

How to pick the right name

Choose the kanji, not just the sound

In Japan the meaning lives in the kanji. Yui can mean only one (唯) or binding (結), so pick the spelling whose meaning you love.

Match the name to the character

Soft, flowery names like Hana and Sakura suit a gentle heroine. Crisp names like Rin, Rei and Tomoe suit a fighter or a cool rival.

Say it the Japanese way

Japanese vowels are short and pure, and syllables get roughly equal weight. Aoi is ah-oh-ee, not ay-oy, and Kaede is kah-eh-deh.

Check modern versus classic

Names ending in -ko, like Michiko and Yoko, feel classic, much like Dorothy or Margaret in English. Names like Tsumugi and Himari feel current.

Anime girl names: the characters behind them, the honorifics fans use, and which Japanese names US parents now choose

By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names

Anime can launch a name. Nezuko, from Demon Slayer, was given to no US girls before 2021 and to 33 in 2023; Mikasa, from Attack on Titan, first appeared in 2018. Some anime names are not everyday Japanese names at all: Mikasa comes from a battleship.

Japanese names are also climbing in the US on their own: in 2025 Hana, Kiyomi, Emi, Yuna and Akira were all in the top 1,000 for girls. The finder above narrows the names on this page by section, length and US popularity.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cute anime girl names?

Hana (flower), Momo (peach), Yume (dream), Suzu (bell), Kurumi (walnut) and Kotori (little bird) are short, sweet and widely used in anime.

Are anime girl names real Japanese names?

Most are. Anime usually gives characters ordinary Japanese given names, which is why every name on this page is a real name used in Japan, with a meaning that depends on its kanji.

Why do so many Japanese girl names end in -ko?

The kanji 子 (ko) means child, and it was the most common ending for girls' names through much of the 20th century. It feels a little old-fashioned today, so newer anime use it less.

Can the same Japanese name have different meanings?

Yes. Japanese names are written in kanji, and one sound can be written many ways. Haruka can be 遥 (distant) or 春香 (spring fragrance), so always check the kanji.

What are popular Japanese girl names right now?

In Meiji Yasuda's 2025 survey of Japanese babies, the top girls' names by kanji were 翠 (Sui or Midori), 陽葵 (Himari) and 紬 (Tsumugi), with 凛 (Rin) fifth. Tsumugi had been No. 1 in 2024.

What does -chan mean in anime?

It shows that the speaker finds someone endearing. It is used for children, close friends, often girls and young women, and even pets, but not for strangers or people one has just met.

Can I name my baby Mikasa or Nezuko?

Yes. Both are registered in the US: in 2025, 17 girls were named Mikasa and 17 Nezuko. Just know where they come from: Mikasa was named after a Japanese battleship, and Nezuko is very rare as a real Japanese name.
