How to pick the right name
Check the real meaning
Some flower-sounding names are not about flowers. Margaret means pearl and Rosalind comes from Old German words for horse and soft, so we left them off. Every name here is a flower word or has a documented link to a flower.
Mix a common bloom with a rare one
Lily and Rose are classics. If you want something less common, try Primula, Linnea or Briallen, or a meaning name like Fiorella or Bláthnat.
Look at heritage
Many families find a flower name in their own language: Padma or Kamala in Hindi, Nasrin or Laleh in Persian, Sakura in Japanese and Azucena in Spanish.
Say it with your surname
Short flower names like Ivy, Iris and Fleur suit long surnames, while longer names like Magnolia or Gelsomina balance a short one.

Floral-sounding, or not?
- Margaret means pearl, from Greek (Behind the Name), and Rosalind comes from Old German words for horse and soft; its spelling was only later shaped by Latin rosa linda, beautiful rose (Behind the Name).
- Rose began as a Norman form of a Germanic name meaning famous type. It was linked to the flower from early on, and when it came back in the 19th century it was probably with the flower in mind (Behind the Name).
- Susan and Susanna come from Hebrew shoshan, lily, which in modern Hebrew also means rose and may go back to Egyptian for lotus (Behind the Name).
- Pansy is left off this page on purpose: besides the flower, it is a dated slur for gay men (Wiktionary).
