How to pick the right name

Choose the hanja, not just the sound

Seoyeon can be written 瑞妍 (auspicious, beautiful) or 書妍 (writing, beautiful). If you register the name in hanja, each character must be on the Supreme Court's list for personal names; a hangul-only name needs no hanja, so settle on the meaning first.

Try a native Korean name

Names like Haneul (sky), Byeol (star) and Iseul (dew) are pure Korean words with no hanja, so the meaning is fixed and easy to explain.

Say it with the surname

Korean full names put the surname first, as in Kim Seoyun. Most given names have two syllables, so say the full three-syllable name aloud before you decide.

Pick an English spelling

Revised Romanization gives Jihyeon and Seoyeon, but many families write Jihyun or Seo-yeon. Choose one spelling and use it on every document.

Korean girl names: the 2025 ranking, the hanja rules, and how Korean names travel

By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names

Korean name rankings move as late birth registrations arrive. An early list in January 2026 had Seoyun first; by October, Namechart's count of court registrations put Seoa first with 2,043 babies, and in 2024 the top name was Iseo. Always date a ranking before you quote it.

Most Korean names are two syllables written in hanja, so the same sound can carry different meanings. Korea's favorite names are still rare in the US: none of 2025's top five went to more than 13 American girls.

  1. Step 1Choose the meaning firstPick the hanja; the sound follows.
  2. Step 2Or choose a native wordHaneul (sky) or Byeol (star) need no hanja.
  3. Step 3Say it with the surnameKorean puts the surname first: Kim Seoa.
  4. Step 4Fix one English spellingJihyeon or Jihyun: choose one and use it everywhere.

The hanja rules

  • An approved list. If a name is registered in hanja, each character must be on the Supreme Court's list for personal names: 2,854 characters when it began in 1991, more than 9,300 after the 2024 update. Characters not on the list are recorded in hangul (Wikipedia).
  • Five syllables at most. Since 1993, a Korean given name can be no longer than five syllables (Wikipedia).
  • One sound, many meanings. Ji-won can be written 智媛, 志媛, 知媛 or 智元, so always ask which hanja a family chose (Behind the Name).

Korean names abroad

  • Spelling. Revised Romanization became South Korea's official system in 2000; in names a hyphen between the given-name syllables is optional, so Seo-a and Seoa are both correct (Wikipedia).
  • Surnames. In the 2015 census, 44.6% of South Koreans were named Kim, Lee or Park (Wikipedia). In the 2020 US Census, Kim ranks No. 71 with 274,068 people and Park No. 274 (Census Bureau).
  • In the US. Korean names that are also used in other languages travel best: Mina (No. 597 in 2025), Hana (No. 658) and Yuna (No. 952) are all in the US top 1,000 for girls (Social Security data).

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular Korean girl name?

Seoa was the most popular girls' name of 2025 in Namechart's count of court birth registrations, with 2,043 babies, just ahead of Seoyun and Harin. In 2024 the top name was Iseo.

Do Korean names have meanings?

Yes. Most are two Sino-Korean syllables, each written with a hanja that has its own meaning, so the same name can mean different things in different families. Native Korean names like Haneul (sky) have one fixed meaning.

What are cute Korean girl names?

Bom (spring), Nabi (butterfly), Saerom (fresh and new), Dami and Yena are short, soft and cute. Names with 美 (mi) or 妍 (yeon), such as Mina and Seoyeon, carry the meaning beautiful.

What are native Korean names?

They are pure Korean words with no hanja, such as Haneul (sky), Byeol (star), Iseul (dew) and Saebom (new spring). Because there are no characters to choose, the meaning stays the same, though a few families still attach hanja.

How are Korean names spelled in English?

This page uses Revised Romanization, South Korea's official system since 2000. Older or personal spellings differ, so Jihyeon is often written Jihyun and Sohui is often Sohee.

Do Korean names have to use hanja?

No. A name can be registered in hangul only, as native names like Haneul (sky) are. If a family does use hanja, each character must be on the Supreme Court's approved list, which has more than 9,300 characters since 2024.

Which Korean girl names are used in the US?

Mina, Hana and Yuna, all in the US top 1,000 for girls in 2025. Korea's own favorites are rare in the US: Seoa, Seoyun and Iseo did not reach the 5 babies needed to appear in US records.
