How the tiefling name generator works
Each birth name is built from an opening, an occasional middle syllable and an ending, drawn from hand-written banks. Choose a Fiendish legacy for its own sound: Infernal names are courtly and hissing (Velissa, Calaphon), Abyssal ones harsh and clipped (Vrakesh), and Chthonic ones low and hollow (Morneth). The three sound sets are our own; the legacies come from the 2024 rules.
A filter rejects awkward letter clusters, everyday words and common first names, along with the names of famous devils and demon lords, well-known tieflings and the sample names printed in the 2014 Player's Handbook. What is left is new, so your character will not share a name with another player's.
Tieflings have three kinds of name: one from the culture that raised them, an infernal name passed down in the family, and, for some young tieflings, a virtue name they choose and try to live up to. Pick a name type to get a virtue name with its meaning, noble or grim, a birth name and a virtue name together, or a name from the people who raised them.
That is Quick mode: instant and unlimited. For something more specific, switch to Custom mode, set a few options and add a sentence of details. An AI language model suggests 10 original names, each with how to say it and a suggested meaning, and More like this gives you variations on any name you like.

Tips for choosing a good name
Hint at the bloodline
Hard X and Z sounds suggest a fierce, fiery ancestry, while soft endings like -ethe and -ira feel older and more courtly. Choose sounds that match the infernal ancestor in your backstory.
Pair it with a virtue name
Many players give a tiefling both: an infernal name the family uses and a virtue name the character chose. Choose Birth name and virtue name above, and the gap between the two is a ready-made backstory.
Plan the short form
Long names get shortened at the table. Decide early whether Zephokai goes by Zeph or Kai so the whole party uses the same nickname.
Say it in character
Introduce yourself out loud the way your character would. If the name is hard to say with confidence, generate again.
