How the elf name generator works
Each name is assembled from three parts: an opening syllable, an optional middle syllable and an ending. The syllables come from hand-written banks that favour soft consonants (l, r, th, s, n, v) and long vowel sounds, which is what makes a name sound elven to most readers.
Female and male elves use different endings. Female names lean on -iel, -wen, -wyn, -ra and -lia; male names on -ion, -or, -dil, -las and -thil. A filter rejects awkward clusters such as triple vowels or four consonants in a row, so every name is pronounceable.
Turn on surnames to add a nature-based family name built from two English words, like Silverbrook or Fernsong. In many settings elves take surnames from a deed, a place or a family tree, and these compounds read naturally in English-language stories.
Choose a kind of elf for its own sound: stately high elves, earthy wood elves, sharp dark elves, watery sea elves and crisp snow elves. Female and Male swap in each kind's endings.
Set Name style to Tolkien-inspired Elvish to build names from real Sindarin and Quenya word parts, such as celeb (silver) and -wen (maiden), with the meaning of each part in the note, or to Christmas elf for names like Tinsel Sugarplum.
That is Quick mode: instant and unlimited. For something more specific, switch to Custom mode, set a few options and add a sentence of details. An AI language model suggests 10 original names, each with how to say it and a suggested meaning, and More like this gives you variations on any name you like.

Tips for choosing a good name
Say it three times fast
You will say your character's name hundreds of times at the table. If it trips your tongue on the third try, generate again or drop the middle syllable.
Match the sound to the subrace
High elves suit long, formal names (Lorandir, Galawen). Wood elves suit earthy, shorter ones (Fenthas, Ainlas). Drow names often use sharper consonants and y or z sounds.
Give the name a nickname
Elven names are long; companions will shorten them. Elarion becomes El, Nyssara becomes Nyss. Decide the nickname early so the party uses it.
Let the surname tell a story
A surname like Thornwalker or Starweaver hints at a family trade or legend. Use it as a hook for your backstory.
