How the ship name generator works

Type two names and the generator tries every way to join the start of one name to the end of the other, in both directions. Taylor and Jordan alone give more than 40 blends, from Taylordan to Jordaylor. Each card shows which piece came from which name and how much of each name it keeps.

Every blend gets a score, following what studies of English blends have found. Blends near the length of the second name score higher, because the second word largely sets a blend's length; so do blends where the shorter name keeps more of itself, the way lunch keeps 80% of its letters in brunch, and blends where the names share letters around the seam. Stubs, stutters like Joror and hard clusters sink down the list.

It also tries the classic celebrity style, where the opening consonants of one name go in front of a name that starts with a vowel, the way Brad and Angelina became Brangelina. Add a third name for a trio and every blend keeps a piece of all three. Short names have fewer ways to split, so two three-letter names may give fewer than 12 results.

Tips for choosing a good name

Say it out loud

The best ship names are easy to say on the first try. If you stumble over a blend, the next one down the list is usually smoother.

Try nicknames, full names and surnames

Ben and Benjamin give very different blends. Swap in a nickname, a full name or a surname, or blend two surnames for a new family name below.

Lock your favorites

Lock the blends you like, then generate again. The locked ones stay put while the rest refresh.

Read it before you share it

Now and then a blend spells an everyday word by accident. Give it a quick read before it goes on a cake, a group chat or a matching shirt.

Where ship comes from

By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 22, 2026 · How we research names

Ship is a clipping of relationship. Around 1995, X-Files fans who wanted Mulder and Scully together called themselves relationshippers, then R'shippers and finally shippers; the earliest records of ship and shipper are 1996 posts in a Usenet group about the show, with shipping following in 1997 and the verb to ship in 1998. Fans write a pairing with a slash, a habit from Kirk/Spock fan fiction of the late 1970s, and an ampersand, Kirk & Spock, for a friendship. In Japanese fandoms the order of the names matters, so A/B and B/A can be different ships.

Couple names before and after Brangelina

In 1871 Lewis Carroll gave portmanteau, a suitcase, its sense of two words packed into one, as slithy packs slimy and lithe. Bennifer, for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, made couple names a celebrity habit in the early 2000s, but blends of two people's names go back more than a century, and as Hoolidge shows, the order can carry a meaning of its own:

What makes a blend work

Linguists have studied blends closely. In a study of 585 English blends, Stefan Gries found that 92.5% join the start of one word to the end of another, that each word must stay recognisable, and that the shorter word usually gives more of itself: in brunch, lunch keeps 80% of its letters and breakfast 22%. Real blends also share more letters and sounds with their source words than random splices do. In experiments, Sabine Arndt-Lappe and Ingo Plag found that the second word largely sets a blend's length and stress, and that a blend is said like a single word. Whether the split has to fall between syllables is still argued over.

The generator follows these findings: it scores blends near the length of the second name, rewards the shorter name for keeping more of itself and the names for sharing letters at the seam, and shows on each card how much of each name survives.

Blending surnames when you marry

Some couples blend their surnames instead of one taking the other's, as a way to give each partner's name equal weight; the former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's name joins Villar and Raigosa. The tool above suggests blends and hyphenated forms for any two surnames.

How to make a ship name

  1. 1

    Type both names

Use the names people actually call them, then try a nickname or full name for new blends.

  2. 2

    Keep both names visible

The best blends keep enough of each name to recognise, and the shorter name usually keeps more of itself.

  3. 3

    Say it aloud

A blend reads like one word with one stress, so pick the one that sounds like a real name.

  4. 4

    Write the pairing

Taylor/Jordan for a romance, Taylor & Jordan for a friendship, and a hashtag for the blend.

  5. 5

    Check before you share

Search the hashtag and read the blend for accidental words before it goes on a cake or a shirt.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ship name?

A ship name blends two names into one, usually for a couple. Ship comes from relationship: X-Files fans who wanted Mulder and Scully together called themselves relationshippers, then shippers, around 1995. Friends, fans and families now use ship names for any pair they love.

How do you combine two names?

Take the start of one name and the end of the other, and look for a join where a consonant meets a vowel or both names share a letter. The generator tries every split in both directions and ranks the results for you.

What is the celebrity style of ship name?

It puts the opening consonants of one name in front of a name that starts with a vowel, the way Brad and Angelina became Brangelina. Bennifer, for Ben and Jennifer, made couple names a celebrity habit in the early 2000s, though blends of two people's names are much older.

Why do I get fewer than 12 ship names?

Short names have fewer ways to split, so two three-letter names may only make a handful of blends. Try a longer version of one name, like Benjamin instead of Ben, for more options.

Can I use it for best friends, pets or characters?

Yes. It works for any two names, so try it for best friends, siblings, pets, a team duo or the characters in your own story.

Can I combine three names?

Yes. Type a third name and every result keeps a piece of all three, the start of one, a bit from the middle of the next and the end of the last, tried in every order.

What does Name/Name mean in fandom?

A slash between two names marks a romantic pairing, a habit that began with Kirk/Spock fan fiction in the 1970s. An ampersand, as in Kirk & Spock, marks a friendship instead.

What does OTP mean?

OTP is a fan's favourite ship, the one they prefer over all others. A ship that becomes official in the story has sailed, and one the story rules out has sunk.

What was the first celebrity couple name?

Bennifer, for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez in the early 2000s, started the modern habit, and Brangelina followed. Blends of two people's names are much older, though: Gilbo Garbage for Greta Garbo and John Gilbert in the silent-film era, and Billary in 1992.

Can a couple blend their surnames when they marry?

Some do: Antonio Villaraigosa's surname joins Villar and Raigosa. The rules for changing a name differ from country to country, so check them first; the tool above suggests blends and hyphenated forms to start with.
