How to pick the right name
Match the name to the person
A calm friend suits Lullaby or Gentle Soul, and a bouncy kid suits Jumping Bean. Think about how they act and what they love, never how they look.
Say it out loud
Cute nicknames work best with soft sounds and one or two syllables. Look up any slang word first: bop now has a rude meaning, and Spatzi means something else in Austria.
Add a sweet ending
Almost any word turns cute with -kins, -bug or -boo. The -kin ending is centuries old: Shakespeare already used lambkin as a pet name. A friend who loves honey becomes Honeybug, and Sweet becomes Sweetkins.
Let it grow naturally
Many favorite nicknames start as a joke or a mispronounced word. Notice which name makes them smile, then keep using it.

Cute nicknames: the pet names people really use, the words to check first, and nicknames that are real names
By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names
Most people keep pet names simple. In a July 2025 YouGov poll of 25,553 US adults, babe, honey and baby were the names used most for a partner, and 29% used none of the listed names. The cuter, more personal nicknames on this page are for kids, friends and family as much as for partners.
A nickname can also go wrong: slang changes, and a sweet word in one country can be rude in another. The finder above narrows the list by section, length and first letter, and the notes below flag the words to check.
The pet names people actually use
| Pet name | Share |
|---|---|
| Babe | 20% |
| Honey | 13% |
| Baby | 10% |
| Love or sweetheart | 6% each |
| Dear | 4% |
| Bae, boo or darling | 2% each |
| Angel, pumpkin or sugar | 1% each |
| None of these | 29% |
Source: YouGov, 25,553 US adults, July 28, 2025; 4% were not sure. Honey, Sweetheart, Darling and Pumpkin are in the classic section above.
Where the cute words come from
- The -kin ending is centuries old. It turns lamb into lambkin, a pet name already in the 1600 edition of Shakespeare's Henry V (Wiktionary). Sweetkins and Munchkin carry the same cozy ending.
- Munchkin started in Oz. L. Frank Baum named the little people of Oz in 1900, and after the 1939 film the word came to mean small children and also people with dwarfism (Wikipedia). Keep it for kids.
- Topolino is Italian for little mouse and has been Mickey Mouse's Italian name since the comic magazine's first issue, on December 31, 1932 (Wikipedia).
Check before you use it
- Slang moves fast. Bop still means a catchy song, but since 2023 it has also been offensive slang for a promiscuous woman (Wiktionary), so this page swapped it for Pip.
- The same word, another country. German Spatz (sparrow) is a pet name for children, but in Austria Spatzi is also a childish word for private parts (Wiktionary). French doudou is a cuddly toy in France and means darling in the Antilles and Africa (Wiktionary).
- For a dog or cat. The American Kennel Club suggests two-syllable names, preferably ending in a vowel, and warns that Kit sounds too much like sit (AKC). For pets, see cute dog names.

Soul Sister, Bestie Bean, Giggle Twin and Secret Keeper are sweet picks for a best friend. The best ones come from something you share, like an inside joke or a favorite snack.
What is a beautiful nickname?
A beautiful nickname has a lovely sound or meaning, like Serendipity, Halcyon or Belle Âme, which is French for beautiful soul. It celebrates who someone is, not how they look.

Buckaroo, Munchkin, Jumping Bean and Puddle Stomper suit busy little ones. Pick a name that matches what they love doing most.
What are cute nicknames for girls?

What nicknames should I avoid?
Check slang and other languages first: bop is now offensive slang, and Spatzi is rude in Austria. Skip names about someone's looks, weight or height, and ask how the person feels about a nickname before using it in public.
Where does the -kins ending come from?
From the old diminutive ending -kin, as in lambkin, which was already a pet name in Shakespeare's Henry V. Adding -kins to a word, as in Sweetkins, makes it sound smaller and cozier.
