How to pick the right name
Name the thing you always talk about
The funniest group chat names describe what really happens in the thread: endless polls, late replies, Grandma's typing. If everyone laughs in recognition, you found it.
Keep it notification-sized
Long names get cut off on lock screens and in the chat list, so the short ones read best. Emoji count too: one family emoji can use 11 characters of an app's limit.
Pick for the whole chat
A name that cracks up your best friends may confuse your aunt or a new coworker. Family and work chats do best with names every member gets right away.
Rename it for big moments
Switch to a trip, holiday or birthday name for a few weeks, then switch back. It keeps an old chat feeling fresh.

Save this list for later
Pin it to a naming board, or tap the heart next to any name to keep it in your favorites on this device.
Group chat names: pick one, make it yours, set it in any app
By The Nomezo Editors ยท Updated October 25, 2026 ยท How we research names
A group chat name lives in a small space: a notification, the top of a thread, a chat list on a lock screen. The ones that stick are short, describe what really happens in the chat, and make every member laugh in recognition, from the grandparents to the new coworker.
Before you fall for one, know how your app handles names. On an iPhone you can only name a chat where everyone uses an Apple device, on Android only you see the name you pick, and in Messenger anyone can rename it. The builder above checks the length for each app as you type.
- Step 1Pick for the whole chatStart from the section that matches who is in it: family, coworkers, a trio or a trip.
- Step 2Make it yoursAdd a surname, a place, a year or everyone's initials in the builder above.
- Step 3Check it fitsShort names read best; emoji use more of the limit than they look.
- Step 4Set it in your appWho can rename the chat, and who sees the name, differs by app.
Who can name the chat in each app
The same name behaves differently depending on the app. The biggest surprises: an iPhone can only name a chat where everyone uses an Apple device, and on Android the name you set is private to you.
| App | Who can name it | How |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (Messages) | Only an iMessage group where everyone uses an Apple device; SMS and MMS groups cannot be named. You can also choose an emoji or Memoji as the group photo. | Tap the group icons at the top of the conversation, then Edit, then Edit Name & Photo (on iOS 18 and earlier, Change Name and Photo). |
| Android (Google Messages) | Works when every member has RCS chats turned on, and only you see the name you choose. | Open the conversation, tap More, then Group details, tap the group name, type the new name and tap OK. |
| Members can change the group name unless an admin has turned on the setting that lets only admins edit group info. | Open the group's info screen and edit the name, which WhatsApp calls the group subject. | |
| Messenger | Chats with three or more people can be named, by anyone in the chat, and everyone sees the name. Names must follow Meta's Community Standards. | Open the chat options, choose Customize chat, then Change chat name, and save. |
| Microsoft Teams | Group chats hold up to 250 people and can be named when you create them or later. | On desktop, start a new message, open the arrow at the right of the To field and type a group name; on mobile, tap the names at the top, then the group chat name. |
How long a group chat name can be
Most apps allow far more than you should use, because a long name gets cut off in notifications and the chat list. Emoji count more than they look, because many are several characters joined together.
- ๐ or โค๏ธ uses 2 characters in apps that count the way most do (UTF-16), even though you see one symbol.
- A family emoji such as ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ is four people joined by invisible characters: 7 Unicode code points, or 11 characters in those counts (Unicode emoji standard).
- Slack channel names allow no emoji or spaces at all: lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores only.
| App | Longest name | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | 128 characters | Group and channel titles, 1 to 128 characters. |
| Discord group DM | 100 characters | Group DM and channel names, 1 to 100 characters. |
| Discord server | 100 characters | Server names, 2 to 100 characters, not counting spaces at either end. |
| 100 characters (reported) | Group subjects grew from 25 to 100 characters in 2023, as reported by WABetaInfo. | |
| Slack channel | 80 characters | Lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores only, up to 80 characters. |
WhatsApp's 100-character limit was reported by WABetaInfo in 2023, not announced by WhatsApp.
What people really call their group chats
In a 2024 poll of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by Vodafone, the most common group chat names were Holibobs, Hen Huns, Famalam, Gossip Girlies and Baes. Family was the most common theme (66%), ahead of friends (55%) and planning nights out (30%). It is a commercial poll from one country, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a census.
Groups can be big: since 2022 a WhatsApp group can hold up to 1,024 people, so a family chat name may need to work for great-aunts and teenagers at once. That is why every name on this page is clean.
