How to pick the right name

Pun on what you actually do

A data team called VLOOKUP and Away or a runner called Will Run for Donuts beats a generic name every time. Start with your job, sport or cause, then look for the joke.

Think about where it will be printed

Names end up on shirts, scoreboards, bibs and sign-up sheets, and some leagues cap them at about 30 characters. Most names here are two to four words, which fit a shirt and a scoreboard.

Poke fun at yourselves, not others

Self-aware names like We Tried or Peaked in High School get laughs without putting anyone down. Skip names that mock another team, a coworker or a client.

Put it to a quick vote

Shortlist three names and let the team vote. People cheer harder for a name they helped pick.

Funny team names, checked: the rules leagues and races set, why Bye is a bad name, and why the office can't hold an Olympics

By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 26, 2026 · How we research names

Leagues police team names more than most people expect: Old Dominion University's intramurals ban drink, drug and sexual references and even names like Bye or Forfeit that would confuse anyone reading the schedule. Some sign-up systems cap names at 32 characters, and scoreboards cut off long ones.

Every name on this page is clean enough for the company newsletter. The finder above narrows the 230+ names by section, number of words or first letter, or searches the notes for a sport, a holiday or a film.

  1. Step 1Pick an occasionWork, rec league, 5K, office party or family day.
  2. Step 2Check the league's rulesNo drink, drug or sexual jokes in many leagues.
  3. Step 3Keep it shortSome leagues cap names at 32 characters.
  4. Step 4Skip OlympicThe word is protected in the US.

Before you register: what leagues and races allow

  • Scoreboards are small. Daktronics, a big scoreboard maker, says its team-name displays limit how many characters fit, and recommends a narrow font for long names (Daktronics). A short name reads better from the bleachers anyway.
Team name rules from real leagues and races
WhoRule
Old Dominion University intramuralsNo vulgar or derogatory language, no drug, alcohol, tobacco, violence or sexual references, no confusing terms such as Bye, Forfeit or Canceled, and no playing in shirts with banned names
Kanjam League sign-ups32 characters or fewer including spaces, only the punctuation ! ? - & , and the apostrophe; inappropriate or taken names are edited
Tobacco Road RelayA name appropriate for public announcement and media; race management asks captains to change one that is not

Brand and Olympic words to avoid on shirts

  • Olympic is a protected word. US law gives the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee exclusive rights to Olympic (36 U.S.C. 220506), and its guidelines tell companies not to use its marks for a contest or team-building event for employees, or look-alikes such as Mathlympics (USOPC). That is why this page says office games, not office Olympics.
  • The courts have backed it. In 1987 the Supreme Court upheld the committee's control of the word, and the event planned as the Gay Olympic Games became the Gay Games (Wikipedia).
  • Brand names hide in team puns. Ticketmaster, Moose Tracks and Frisbee are trademarks, so this page uses Ticket Closers, Mighty Moose and ultimate instead. A pun on a film is fine on a league sheet, but think twice before printing it on shirts you sell.

Frequently asked questions

What are some funny team names?

Amateur Hour Pros, Taco Bout Winning, Cheetahs Never Prosper and Sir Winsalot are reliable crowd-pleasers. Puns and self-aware jokes get the biggest laughs without making fun of anyone.

What is a good funny team name for work?

Pick a joke from your own field, like VLOOKUP and Away for analysts, The Bug Busters for software testers or HR-mazing for a people team. Office jokes everyone recognizes usually land best.

What are good team names for a charity run or 5K?

Hot Cross Runs, Will Run for Donuts, Sole Mates and Gobble Wobblers are easy to read on a shirt. Add your cause or company name underneath.

How do you come up with a funny team name?

Start with what the team does, then twist it with a food pun, an animal pun or a famous movie line. Say a few options out loud and keep the one that gets the quickest laugh.

What makes a good team name?

A good team name is short, easy to cheer and clean enough for a scoreboard or the company newsletter. Most good ones are two to four words, and some leagues cap names at about 30 characters.

Can a league make us change our team name?

Yes. Many leagues and races review names: Old Dominion University's intramurals ban vulgar, drug, alcohol and sexual references, and the Tobacco Road Relay asks captains to change any name unfit for public announcement.

Can we call our event the Office Olympics?

Better not. In the US the word Olympic is protected by federal law, and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee's guidelines tell companies not to use its marks for employee contests or team-building events. Office Games works just as well.
