Unique names: 140+ rare and uncommon baby names with meanings
143 names · Updated · By The Nomezo Editors · Save to Pinterest
Unique names are real names that are rarely used in the US, like Eirian (Welsh, bright and beautiful), Tinashe (Shona, we are with God) and Zlata (Slavic, golden). Each one is common enough somewhere to have a documented meaning, so it is rare without being invented.
This page lists 140+ uncommon names, starting with unique unisex names, then rare girl names and rare boy names grouped by origin: Welsh, European, Middle Eastern, Asian and African. Each note gives the meaning and the language it comes from, with a pronunciation tip where it helps. For more, see our separate lists of unique girl names and unique boy names, which share no names with this page.

How to pick the right name
Say it out loud first
A rare name should still be easy to live with. Try it with your last name, and check that teachers will say it right after hearing it once.
Choose a name with a real meaning
A documented meaning, like Najah for success or Aritz for oak tree, gives a child a story to tell. Invented spellings rarely have one.
Honor a heritage you share
Many of these names come from living languages and faiths. They mean most when they connect to your family, a place you love or a culture you belong to.
Check how rare it really is
The US Social Security Administration's name files list every name given to at least five girls or five boys in a year. Each spelling counts separately: Reem went to 138 US girls in 2025, Rim to just 5. The finder above shows the 2025 figure for every name here.

Unique names, measured: how rare each name on this page is, which unisex names really go to both, and how the SSA counts
By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names
“Unique” is a claim about numbers, so we checked it. Of the 143 names on this page, 91 were given to fewer than 5 US girls and fewer than 5 US boys in 2025, 51 more were outside the top 1,000 and 1 ranked inside it. The tag beside each name in the finder shows its figure.
Rare is also more common than it used to be. In 1950, 6,109 different girls' names and 4,196 boys' names were each given to at least 5 US babies; in 2025 the figures were 17,297 and 13,930.
How rare is rare?
| Tier | What it means | Names on this page |
|---|---|---|
| Top 1,000 | Recognized: the 1,000th names, Harmoni and Langston, went to 252 girls and 227 boys | 1 |
| Outside the top 1,000 | Rare: fewer than about 250 girls or 250 boys | 51 |
| Fewer than 5 | Very rare: too few for Social Security to list at all | 91 |
Source: US Social Security Administration, 2025 national file. A name counts in the top 1,000 if it ranks there for girls or for boys.
Unisex names, girls against boys
A name can be documented for girls and boys and still go almost entirely to one in the US. These are the names from the first section of this page:
| Name | Girls | Boys |
|---|---|---|
| Jules | 88 | 131 |
| Ridley | 95 | 71 |
| Linden | 81 | 129 |
| Auden | 67 | 89 |
| Laurie | 60 | Under 5 |
| Eirian | Under 5 | 7 |
| Larkin | 41 | 34 |
| Najah | 7 | Under 5 |
| Safa | 249 | Under 5 |
| Makena | 63 | Under 5 |
| Tinashe | Under 5 | Under 5 |
| Rutendo | Under 5 | Under 5 |

Rare today, popular tomorrow?
| Name | US girls in 2020 | US girls in 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Solenne | 7 | 76 |
| Xolani | 63 | 209 |
| Safa | 117 | 249 |
| Reem | 90 | 138 |
| Hiba | 56 | 85 |
Source: US Social Security Administration. Xolani is a Zulu boy's name, but in the US it now goes mostly to girls. And a rare name can have been common once: Laurie was No. 37 for US girls in 1960, with 10,143 babies, and went to 60 in 2025.
How Social Security counts names
- The search shows the top 1,000. The SSA's online name search covers each year's top 1,000; its downloadable national files list every name given to at least 5 girls or 5 boys (SSA: beyond the top 1,000).
- Each spelling is its own name. Spellings are not combined (SSA background), so a name can look rarer than it is: the Arabic name Reem went to 138 US girls in 2025 and its spelling Rim to 5.
- Accents are dropped. The files use plain letters only, so Torbjörn is counted as Torbjorn.
Three checks before you choose
- Old or new? Vesna has been a given name only since the 20th century, Delyth is a recent Welsh creation, and Nekane, the Basque equivalent of Dolores, was coined by Sabino Arana in his 1910 list of Basque saints' names (Behind the Name). Real names, just younger than they sound.
- What it means in English. Say the name and every spelling of it aloud. The Arabic name Rim is also an English word, which is why this page uses the more common Reem.
- Day names. Akan families name a child for the day of birth: Kojo, a form of Kwadwo, is a Monday boy (Wikipedia), so choose one only if it fits the birthday.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most unique name?
There is no single answer, but names like Islwyn, Ziemowit, Lisakhanya and Nekane are real names that very few American children share. A name is unique when it is rare where you live, not when it is made up.
What are some rare unisex names?
Try Ridley (reed clearing), Auden (old friend), Linden (linden tree) or Larkin (a pet form of Laurence), each given to both US girls and boys in 2025, or Eirian (bright, beautiful) and Tinashe (we are with God), documented for both.
What are uncommon names that are easy to spell?
Zlata, Dilys, Hester, Rami, Stig and Uhuru are rare in the US but spelled the way they sound. Names like Myfanwy and Siwan are lovely but need a pronunciation guide.
Are unique names a good idea?
A rare name can help a child stand out and carry family history. Choose one with a clear meaning and a pronunciation people can learn quickly, and pair it with a familiar middle name if you want a backup.
How do I find out if a name is rare?
The Social Security Administration's name search shows only each year's top 1,000. For rarer names, check its national name files, or the finder on this page: a name missing from the files went to fewer than five girls, or fewer than five boys, that year.
Is a name outside the top 1,000 rare?
Rarer than most, but not one of a kind. In 2025 the 1,000th girls' name, Harmoni, went to 252 babies and the 1,000th boys' name, Langston, to 227, so a name just outside the list can still have a couple of hundred namesakes a year.
Why can't I find a name on the Social Security website?
The SSA's name search shows only the top 1,000 names for each year. Its national files list every name given to at least 5 girls or 5 boys, so a name missing from those went to fewer than 5 boys or girls that year.
