How to pick the right name

Start with a story

Many Persian names come with a story, from the hero Sohrab to the just king Khosrow. Read a little about the person behind the name so you can tell it one day.

Mind the final eh

Many Persian girl names end in -eh, like Taraneh or Afsaneh, and are stressed on the last syllable. Some families write -e or -a instead, so pick one spelling and keep it.

Check the English sound

Persian kh and gh are said in the throat, as in Khosrow and Ghoncheh. Names like Payam, Ramin and Ziba travel easily in any language.

Mix Persian and Arabic roots

Iranian families often pair a Persian name with an Arabic one, as in Nazanin Zahra, a top-10 girls' name in Iran. On an Iranian birth certificate a double name counts as one name, so it lets you honor faith and heritage together.

How Iranian names and surnames work

  • One name, even when it is two. Parents choose the name, a double name such as Mohammad Mehdi counts as one name, names that are offensive or do not suit the child's sex are banned, and a birth must be registered within 15 days (Eghtesad Online).
  • Surnames are about a century old. A 1919 act introduced surnames, and Reza Shah made them compulsory, choosing Pahlavi, a name with Sasanian roots, for himself (Wikipedia).
  • What the endings mean. The common ending -i means of, as in Tehrani or Shirazi; -zadeh means descendant of; -pour and -nejad also mark descent or clan (Wikipedia).
  • Epic names, royal pedigree. Shah Ismail I, founder of the Safavid dynasty, named three of his four sons, including Tahmasp, after shahs and heroes of the Shahnameh (Wikipedia).

Persian names Americans already use

  • Persian surnames in the US. Ahmadi (4,533 people), Karimi (3,042), Mohammadi (2,216) and Tehrani (1,307) all appear in the 2020 US Census (US Census Bureau).
