How to pick the right name
Start with what the goddess rules
Pick a domain you love, like the moon (Selene, Luna, Chang'e), the dawn (Aurora, Eos, Usha) or wisdom (Athena, Minerva, Saraswati), then choose the name that sounds best to you.
Check the whole myth
Some goddesses have dark sides or tragic stories, and some names sound different in English: Snotra, Nut and Hel invite teasing. Read the myth and say the name aloud before using it for a baby, a pet or a character.
Respect living traditions
Hindu, Yoruba, Shinto, Buddhist, Chinese, Hawaiian and Inuit goddesses are still honored today. Names like Lakshmi and Parvati are common baby names in India, but using them for jokes, pets or brands can offend.
Use the everyday form
Several goddess names are also ordinary given names: Irene, Diana, Aurora, Luna, Phoebe and Freya fit right in at school while keeping the mythic story.

Goddess names: which ones Americans give their daughters, why the goddess's job isn't the name's meaning, and the names to think twice about
By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names
Aurora is the goddess name of the moment: No. 15 for US girls in 2025, its best rank ever, with Iris and Phoebe also at record highs. Luna and Athena have already peaked, and Isis fell off a cliff after 2014, when the name was taken by a militant group.
A goddess's domain is not her name's meaning: nobody knows what Athena means. The finder above narrows the goddesses by mythology, length and US popularity, and the tags show each name's 2025 figure.
Goddess names Americans use

Source: US Social Security Administration, births 1880 to 2025. Freya's spellings add up: 1,746 girls were named Freya, 352 Freyja and 37 Freja in 2025, all from Old Norse Freyja, lady (Behind the Name).
The goddess's job is not the name's meaning
- Some names mean what the goddess rules. Selene means moon, Eos dawn, Irene peace and Nike victory.
- Some have no known meaning. Behind the Name lists the meaning of Athena, Juno and Pele as unknown; Athena's probably comes from the city of Athens. "Goddess of wisdom" describes her, not her name.
- Goddesses in the calendar. Friday is Frigg's day (Wikipedia), June is named after Juno (Wikipedia), and cereal takes its name from Ceres.
