How to pick the right name

Match the name to his energy

A calm lap cat suits Wilfred or Teddy. A kitten who sprints at 3 a.m. needs something like Dash, Hermes or Maverick.

Give big names a short form

Bartholomew, Montgomery and Napurrleon are fun on paper. Pick the nickname you will actually shout at dinnertime, like Barty, Monty or Nap.

Check it against the household

Avoid a name that rhymes with another pet or a family member. In a 2022 study, cats learned the names of the other cats they lived with, so Kevin and Devin under one roof will confuse everyone.

Boy cat names: popular picks, what cats can hear, and why toms are toms

By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names

The most popular boy cat names are short people names: Milo, Leo and Oliver top every recent list. They are popular because they are easy to call, and they have a catch: a cat named Milo may share his name with half the cats at the vet.

Cats do learn their names, and the names of the other cats they live with, so a second cat's name should sound clearly different from the first. The tools above check that.

  1. Step 1Match the name to his energyA calm lap cat and a 3 a.m. sprinter need different names.
  2. Step 2Check it against the householdCats learn housemates' names; avoid ones that sound alike.
  3. Step 3See how common it isMilo and Leo lead every list, so expect company.
  4. Step 4Give big names a short formNapurrleon is fun on paper; Nap is what you will call.

Rover's users name their male cats Milo, Leo, Oliver, Simba and Loki most often (Rover), and Milo was Rover's top male cat name of 2025 (Rover, 2025). Trupanion's 2025 list of insured cats has Milo 2nd, Leo 4th and Oliver 5th, and in U.S. News 2026 Milo is 2nd overall. All of these are company data, not official counts.

What cats can hear in a name

You may read that cats respond best to names with an “ee” sound. We found no study behind that; any name works if you use it consistently and it does not sound like the other names at home.

Cats tell their own name from other words

In four experiments with 16 to 34 cats each, cats heard four words and then their own name. Most stopped reacting to the words and reacted again to their name, even when a stranger said it. The reactions were small: ears and heads moved, but fewer than 10% of the cats meowed, moved their tail or got up. Cats living in cat cafés could not tell their name from their housemates' names.

Saito et al. 2019

Cats learn the other cats' names too

Household cats looked longer at a screen when a housemate cat's photo came with the wrong name, as if they expected another face. A second experiment found the same with family members' names. Café cats showed no such effect, and the first experiment used 48 cats, so the result needs repeating.

Takagi et al. 2022

Toms, gibs and ginger boys

  • Why tom? The word tomcat was popularized by an English book of 1760, The Life and Adventures of a Cat, whose male cat was called Tom (Wiktionary). An older British word for a male cat, especially a neutered one, is gib.
  • Orange cats are mostly boys. A 2025 study traced orange fur to a small change on the X chromosome, so a male needs one copy to be orange and a female needs two (ScienceDaily).
  • Male calicos are rare. A tom with orange and black patches usually has an extra X chromosome (XXY), which also makes him sterile (Merck Veterinary Manual).
  • Some “unique” cat names are top baby names. In 2025, Theodore was the No. 4 US baby boy name, Miles No. 44, Maverick No. 49, Silas No. 71 and Atlas No. 75 (Social Security data).
