How to pick the right name
Pair a long name with a short call name
Trainers, the AKC among them, suggest a call name of one or two syllables. Put the full title on the papers and call Sir Reginald Fluffington III plain Reggie at home. For AKC registration, spell the number out: Sir Reginald Fluffington the Third.
Imagine the vet calling it
Someone will read the name out in a full waiting room. Pick one you will enjoy hearing, and that the vet can say without blushing.
Use contrast
The funniest names clash with the pet: a tiny dog called Goliath, a giant one called Tiny, a cat with a very ordinary human name like Linda.

Outrageous pet names: what a registry allows, the plain names real pets get, and why Linda is funny on a cat
By The Nomezo Editors · Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research names
An outrageous name can go on official papers, within limits. The American Kennel Club allows up to 50 characters, counting spaces, but no Roman numeral at the end, so Sir Reginald Fluffington III has to be registered as Sir Reginald Fluffington the Third.
The tool above finds the short call name inside a long title and checks it against the AKC's format rules. The tables below show which plain names real cats already get and why human names like Linda and Gary sound so funny on a pet.
Long names on paper: the AKC's rules
| Rule | What the AKC says |
|---|---|
| Length | Up to 50 characters, counting spaces, apostrophes and hyphens; an extra fee over 36 |
| Numbers | No Roman numeral at the end; numbers written out, like the Third, are fine |
| Titles | No Champion, Champ, Sieger or other AKC title or show term |
| Letters | The standard English alphabet; accents and umlauts are not printed |
| Sharing | Up to 37 dogs of each breed may have the same name |
| Changes | Only for dogs born in the US, and not after a registered litter or an AKC award |
Source: American Kennel Club: naming of a dog. For everyday use the AKC suggests a short call name of one or two syllables (AKC), which is trainer advice rather than a tested rule.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most outrageous pet name?
Long royal titles get the biggest reaction, like Sir Reginald Fluffington III, Lady Penelope Whiskerface Von Snoot or Grand Overlord Snickerdoodle. Pair one with a short nickname for everyday use.
What are some funny pet names?
Chewbarka, Sherlock Bones, Catastrophe, Hairy Pawter and Purrminator are favorite funny picks. The funny names people really use are simpler: Baby was No. 17 and Bandit No. 80 in U.S. News's 2026 list of cat names.
What are weird pet names?
Weird pet names are everyday words used as names, like Spreadsheet, Toaster, Wi-Fi or Lasagna Wednesday. Ordinary human names such as Kevin, Linda and Gary are also surprisingly funny on pets.
Is it OK to give a pet a really long name?
Yes. Use the full name for paperwork and fun, and a short call name day to day. The AKC suggests a call name of one or two syllables, though no study has tested name length, and its registration papers allow up to 50 characters.
Do pets know their own names?
Many do. A 2019 study found most cats react to their own name more than to other words of the same length, even when a stranger says it. Dogs pick out their name in a noisy room if it is at least as loud as the chatter.
Can I register a dog with a really long or silly name?
Yes, within the AKC's rules: up to 50 characters including spaces, an extra fee over 36, no Roman numeral at the end and no show titles like Champion. Write the number out, as in Sir Reginald Fluffington the Third.
What is the funniest real pet title?
Hard to beat Major General Sir Nils Olav III, a king penguin at Edinburgh Zoo who holds a rank in the Norwegian King's Guard. Larry the cat has been Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office in London since 2011.
